NordVPN Review (2026): The Good, the Bad, and the Renewal Bill

What it is

NordVPN is a paid VPN app for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux and a few routers and TV boxes. It sends your traffic through a server the company runs. Your internet provider then sees a connection to that server instead of a list of the sites you open. The site you visit sees the server's address instead of yours.

One account covers 10 devices at the same time. There is a 30-day money-back window on the plan. Both of those are current as of our check on 26 Aug 2026.

Who owns it: NordVPN's parent company, Nord Security, and Surfshark announced a merger on 2 February 2022. The two brands sit under one holding company. Both say they still run separately, with their own infrastructure and their own product plans. That is worth knowing if you were about to compare NordVPN against Surfshark and treat them as rivals from different camps. We wrote more about this in who owns your VPN.

What's actually good

Ten devices is a real number. Most households run out of VPN slots before they run out of devices. Ten covers a couple of phones, two laptops, a tablet and a TV box with room left over. You are not managing a queue.

The 30-day window is the feature. A refund window is the only honest way to test a VPN. Speed depends on your line, your distance to the server and the time of day. Streaming behaviour changes month to month. No review, including this one, can tell you what your connection will do. Thirty days can.

It is the boring choice, and that counts. NordVPN is on every platform, the apps are maintained, and support is staffed. If a VPN is a background utility for you, boring is the correct thing to buy.

What's actually bad

The renewal bill is the whole story. The advertised monthly rate is a first-term rate. It is spread across a 27-month term. When that term ends, the plan renews at a higher rate, and it renews on its own. This is not a NordVPN quirk. It is how this category prices. But it is the single thing most buyers miss, so we put it here rather than in the fine print.

You can see the same shape written down at a competitor. CyberGhost's own pricing page states the intro rate, the intro total, then the words "autorenews" and a yearly figure that works out much higher per month. Surfshark's pricing page goes the other way and gives no renewal number at all. Its own wording is that you will be charged the applicable renewal price. Read those two pages back to back and you have the category in one minute.

We could not verify NordVPN's US dollar prices on 26 Aug 2026. The pricing page served us prices in another currency because of where our connection came from. So we are not printing a dollar figure. A stale or wrong price is worse than no price. Open the checkout page and read the number yourself before you pay.

Auto-renewal is still on you. In the United States, the rule that would have forced simple cancellation for subscriptions was struck down on 8 July 2025, days before it was due to take full effect. It was thrown out on process grounds, not because the idea was wrong, and other laws still apply. The practical effect for you is unchanged: nobody is going to make cancelling one click. Put a calendar reminder two weeks before your term ends. That habit is worth more than any coupon.

Streaming promises are not ours to make. NordVPN labels servers for streaming. What it cannot do is promise a named service will play. Netflix has said in public since 14 January 2016 that people using proxies and unblockers will only see the catalogue for the country they are physically in. Its current help page repeats that VPNs can cause errors, and adds that VPNs are not supported for live events or on an ad-supported plan. So if you are on the cheap ad tier, this is not a maybe. Who it's for, and who should skip it

Buy it if: you want one app that works everywhere, you have a lot of devices, and you would rather not think about it again. Buy it if you travel and want a large server list. Buy it if you are going to actually use the 30-day window to check that your streaming services behave.

Who should NOT buy this:

• People who will not remember a renewal date. If a forgotten subscription is a pattern in your life, a 27-month term is a trap you are building for yourself. Pay monthly, or pick a shorter term, even though it costs more per month.
• People who want to try before committing. There is no free tier here. If you want to run a VPN for a few weeks at zero cost and zero card details, Proton VPN has a genuinely free tier and that is the better door in.
• People buying it for one streaming service. If your only reason is one library in one country, you are buying a coin flip that also renews. Test it inside the refund window or do not start.
• People who want the cheapest possible price. NordVPN is not priced as a bargain brand. Look at cheap VPNs instead, with the renewal maths in front of you.
• People who think a VPN makes them anonymous. It does not. It moves the record of your browsing from your internet provider to the VPN company. In December 2021, Consumer Reports evaluated 16 VPNs in depth and found 12 of them either misrepresented their products or made exaggerated claims about the protection they gave. Buy a VPN for what it does, not for the poster.

Prices move. Anything on any review site, ours included, can be out of date by the time you click. The checkout page is the only number that binds anyone.

Three questions people actually ask

Will NordVPN work with my streaming service?

We will not promise that, and you should be careful with any site that does. NordVPN offers servers labelled for streaming. Whether a given service plays for you depends on that service, your plan and the day. Netflix says on its own help page that VPNs are not supported for live events or on ad-supported plans. Sign up, test your services in the first week, and use the 30-day window if it does not do what you need.

Why is the renewal price higher than the price I paid?

Because the low rate is a first-term rate spread over 27 months. After that, the plan renews at the standard rate for the term you chose. Every large VPN prices this way to some degree. Some print the renewal figure on the page. Some do not. Check before you buy, and set a reminder for the end of your term.

Is NordVPN the same company as Surfshark?

Not the same brand, but the same owner. Nord Security and Surfshark announced their merger on 2 February 2022 and now sit under one holding company. Both companies state they operate autonomously, with separate infrastructure. It is a disclosure point, not proof of anything bad. It just means those two are not the independent alternatives they look like on a comparison table.
